Chapter 17

Ariana groaned as she woke up, her entire body aching. Something felt wrong, was wrong, was very wrong. She hurt all over, and not because of the sex that she had enjoyed the night before. Something else, something important, something that tickled in the back of her mind. She wasn’t awake enough to even process anything other than she felt as though her stomach was being dragged out of her by a pair of fiery hooks.

Shit. It was that time of the month, and she hadn’t even found her heating pad yet among her things. This was bad. Shit, shit, shit.

She needed to get up, make certain she hadn’t started bleeding already, and prepare herself mentally for what was about to begin. She just didn’t have the strength yet.

She had only accepted his offer to stay in town for the long-term two days earlier, and now? Now, they were about to face their first real test. Was he actually like Derek? Would he be mean to her, be spiteful? Would he complain about the lack of sex? Would he complain if she stained the sheets? Would he be annoyed that she laid in bed and didn’t want to do anything?

And worse, what would she even do? Normally, she would have spent the time binge watching a show, but there was no television, she didn’t have a laptop anymore since she had returned her work one, and her phone didn’t get service to watch anything. Was she going to just die of boredom? Perhaps now was the time to read one of those books in her car that she had put off for too long.

Who was she kidding? If Ariana had it her way, she would sleep for the next week until it was over with. Hopefully, her cycle was fast and short. And while she was wishing, she’d hope for a hottub, a giant tub of ice cream to magically appear, and wifi service so she could binge watch Sex and the City on her phone. Yeah right.

She forced herself up out of the bed and checked the sheets. They were spotless, thankfully, which meant she had time. She needed to get dressed and head down to her car to grab her emergency supply pack. When she had unpacked her bathroom items, which Derek had rather unceremoniously tossed together, she had noticed that none of her normal period supplies were within. All she had was the few items in her car so she would need to run to the store as well.

Except, she wanted to puke, and standing up straight hurt almost immediately.

She took a few steps towards the bathroom when she just felt it. Why could she always feel it? All of a sudden, it seemed as though the flood gates had opened, and she let out a groan, trying to waddle her way to the bathroom quickly.

The bed moved behind her, and she suddenly felt Colburn wrapping his arms around her body, pulling her to him as his hands pressed to her stomach.
